Why Work So Hard?

I’ve often been asked this question over the years, in different forms. Some people assume that it’s because I have big financial rewards. While some question me as to why I devote so much time to a company or work but not prioritising other things. I just thought I’ll share my perspective and bust some of the myths, especially for people who might find this helpful in making certain life choices.

I’m going to try to address the why.

A) Genetics?

I think it’s my natural build to be like this, growing up with strong women around me who pushed themselves hard and wanted to do their best every day, in their respective roles. They all had a “just do it” mentality, but unlike me, they were also women of very few words. I was told I got this from my paternal grandpa😝

B) Clarity on What I Want in a Role

Thanks to my early days of dabbling in various forms of entrepreneurship from a young age (which is a topic for another post) + the empowerment that I have had to make decisions about my life, I know what I want/ don’t want in a role. I want to sell something that I am convinced about, and I need to keep learning new things (yes, even at this age). And if I find this, yes - I will be slightly addicted to it/ obsessed about it. I’m not endorsing my style of working in any way, but I also don’t think there is anything wrong with it.

C) Met the Right People & the Right Product to Sell

My ride to CaratLane was a very rocky one. It involved 3 job changes in 2.5 years. So, you’re very lucky if you found this right after B-school. I found leaders (and partners) who understood my limitations as well as my potential well. I was young and raw, but my boss always preferred that I think through it on my own first, and then go to him for guidance. That has shaped the way I work, and it allowed me to increase my independence and space more quickly over the years. (This is also something that I need in order to thrive). Btw guys, this is not a birthright and needs to be earned.

B) It all comes back to B after that

Because I am clear about B, my bosses know about this well. I keep pushing for B naturally, and they help clear or restructure the path for me while making sure it’s in the interest of the business as well. Tomorrow my priorities might change, but until then I am very satisfied. In conclusion, it’s not for the financial rewards or even the position that I’m in today - I have always been like this, guys. Having said that, I do know what my work is worth and I do strive to be paid reasonably for it after adjusting for some of the non-financial perks:)
